UCC-SoPPS STAFF SWEEPS AWARD
Staffs of the University of Cape Coast SoPPS have won the prestigious research grants across all categories at the just ended Sixth Research Awards and Grants Ceremony held on the 9th December 2021 at the School of Medical Sciences Auditorium. The support from the University’s committee is to deepen research, excellence, innovation and technologically entrepreneurship which will accelerate national development. The University of Cape Coast instituted this research award scheme in 2016 as a veritable platform to celebrate research activities closely aligned with thematic areas of interests to the various departments in UCC.
Lecturers applied for all categories of the research support grants available and won across all categories. Out of 39 selected winners in this year’s ceremony which cuts across the five colleges in the university, 6 lectures from School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SoPPS) were awarded. The grants were awarded to the following individuals as the Principal Investigation (PI).
- Dr Daniel Anokwah – Individual Award
- Dr. Robert Peter Binney – Group-Led Award
- Dr. Ernest Obese – Group-Led Award
- Dr. Isaac Tabirir Henneh – Inter – Departmental Award
- Dr. Esther Eshun Oppong – Policy & Practice.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of the UCC, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong explained that as an institution, the research award has catapult UCC to the top of the Times Higher Education Ranking for 2022 where UCC was ranked the best University in Ghana and West Africa and the 4th best in Africa. He called for acre output from lecturers to help UCC maintain their standing in the ranking.
The Dean of UCC SoPPS, Prof Elvis Ameyaw congratulated the lecturers and promised the school’s support to the awarded teams to enable them complete their research and staff should try to maximize grants. Dr Esther Eshun Oppong who is the Team Lead (Principal Investigator) for the Policy and Practice (University-wide) Research Grant Award was very happy the team won after the huge competition and appreciated the team for the effort put into the proposal before submission. She concluded that “ we need to celebrate the feat but also remember that the actual work has just began”.
