PUBLIC LECTURE. PHARMACY EDUCATION: NEW INSIGHT BY PROFESSOR JON P. WIETHOLTER

The School of Pharmacy at the University of Cape Coast hosted a public lecture on February 28, 2024, with the theme 'Pharmacy Education: New Insights’. The lecture, presented by Professor Jon Wietholther, a Fullbright Specialist from West Virginia University, USA, an internal medicine, clinical pharmacist which took place at Auditorium 900, University of Cape Coast, with an audience of over 500 pharmacy students, preceptors, teaching and non-teaching staff.

The special guest of honor was the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Ekor, while the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor Elvis Ameyaw, served as the host.

The lecture aimed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Review potential benefits and mechanisms for integrating activities within a School of Pharmacy curriculum or its structure.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of team-based learning and how to design and conduct such sessions.

  3. Describe potential opportunities for educational gaming and the hypothetical benefits, including creating increased active learning opportunities.

  4. Summarize the updated curricular outcomes and entrustable professional activities (COEPAs) developed in 2022 and the reasons behind their development.

  5. Prepare a simulation-based activity to enhance student engagement through an active learning approach and serve as a unique assessment opportunity.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions during the session. In his closing remarks, the Dean expressed heartfelt gratitude for the enriching lecture, extending thanks to all participants, the US Embassy in Ghana, the University community, and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
